Bulk create attributes

Bulk Create lets you create a large number of attributes in a single step. Every row you add becomes one attribute when you click Create. The saving of these attributes goes in one bulk, meaning either all rows succeed or nothing is created.

When to use

Use Bulk Create when you are setting up a new product catalogue and need to define many attributes before any product has been created. After the bulk save you can open each attribute individually to add values, thumbnails, descriptions, and rules.

How to open

On the Catalog › Attributes page, click Bulk Create in the top-right toolbar.

The bulk create table

The table starts with one empty row. Each row represents one attribute you want to create.

Bulk create table

ColumnRequiredWhat to fill in
NameYesThe display name of the attribute (translatable in the single edit form later).
IdentifierNoA unique machine-readable key. Leave blank and Expivi generates one from the name. Identifiers must be unique across the entire attribute catalogue. Duplicate identifiers within the same form are flagged immediately.
TypeYesThe attribute type: Static, Configurable, Bundle, Constrained, or Print. Defaults to Static.
Value TypeYes (except Constrained)The kind of value this attribute holds. The options change depending on the Type you selected. For Constrained rows the value type is inherited from the parent and shows as "Inherited from parent".
StatusYesActive or Inactive. Defaults to Active.
Attribute SectionNoAssigns the attribute to a section label for grouping in the list view (Attributes).

Adding and removing rows

  • Click Add Row (bottom of the table) to add a new empty row.
  • Click the trash can icon on a row to remove it. The last remaining row cannot be removed.
  • There is a maximum number of rows per submit (maximum of 50); a notice appears when the limit is reached.

Type-specific settings (Settings drawer)

For most types the table columns are sufficient. The Settings gear icon on each row opens a drawer where you can configure type-specific options:

  • Constrained rows require the Settings drawer. You must select a Parent attribute before the row is valid. Until a parent is selected, the row is highlighted and the Create button stays disabled.
  • For other types, the drawer gives you the same settings that are available on the dedicated create/edit page. For example, a Configurable Number row lets you set a default value, min, max, decimal places, and step.

Open the drawer, adjust settings, then click Apply to confirm. Click Cancel to discard drawer changes without affecting the row.

Creating

Click Create in the sidebar to submit all rows at once.

  • The button is disabled while any identifier is being validated or while a Constrained row has no parent.
  • If server-side validation fails for a row (for example, an identifier is already taken), the offending row is highlighted and the error is shown inline. No attributes from that batch are created.
  • On success you are returned to the attribute list and a confirmation toast appears.
Best practice

Keep identifiers short, lowercase, and hyphen-separated (for example colour-exterior). A consistent naming pattern makes it much easier to reference attributes in rules and mapping later.

Best practice

Fill in the Name and Identifier columns in the table, leave everything else at the defaults, and click Create. Then open each attribute individually to add values and detailed settings. This is faster than trying to configure everything in the drawer during bulk creation.
